The photo's of our setting- New and Old

The four pictures below are of our NEW setting. We decided to use the stereotypical graveyard as seen in photo 1 because we felt that it related to horror through death and also help to create a mood to the film. We also chose it because it is a quite place where you are usually all alone with nobody else around so if something happens it could create suspence. We chose the alley attached to the graveyard (Photo 2 (Right)) because like the grave it woudl be isolated and quite. As for the bottom to images we chose them mainly because of the plain dull walls that could create a good effect in terms of the atmosphere during the film. In the end we only used the corner of the room as seen in image 4 (bottom right) because of the small window at the top of the wall so we could use it as a basement type room and also because it would help contribute towards the lighting.

The top two images are of the graveyard and attached alley located on Cemetry Lane in St Neots. 

The bottom two images are of 6T2 which is a teaching room inside of Ernulf Academy 6th Form.

The four pictures below are of our original setting. We had decided to use the park as we felt that at night it has the potential to be quite intimidating and scary. Whilst at the park we made the decision to use the bridge in the 2nd photo rather than the one in the 1st because of it old, crooked look and we felt that it made it relate more to a horror. The tunnel is the 3rd and 4th photos were picked as a part of our setting because they looked dark and were isolated away from the housing estate with train tracks located directly on top which could create tension when a train passes.

Plot: Roughly six months after the first horror featuring Samara and many victims, a new video tape has emerged that proves that there is a new terror waiting in the darkness. Main actress Rachel (Naomi Watts) finally hears of a recent death involving a college student and the death is caused by similar incidents as Samara’s past victims. Now Rachel’s son (Aidan) is in danger and it is down to her to prevent her sons death.




Themes: One of the major themes in the Ring 2 is water. this is because Samara (The main character) has a fear of it as her spirit is stuck at the bottom of a well. it is also assumed to be a main theme because there are many suggestions throughout the film that Samara's dad was a water demon and in some religions water is seen as a form of purification.

Setting- After everything that happened in the original Ring the film move out of the city and into a small rural town called astoria, USA.

Props- Within the fil (the Ring 2) there are many props used. In extract lasting approximately one and a half minutes, there are several props that include; The tape which becomes a main feature in the film once again, a TV that creates a fealing a fear and also a room that is overflowing with water, which also has a major part in the film as the story is based on a girl in a well.



Lighting- The majority of the film is light by natural light which helps to make the film feel more realistic. In the TV world they used dull lighting so that it would seem more creepy and therefor create a tense feeling.



Sound (Diegetic and Non-Diegetic)- Henning Lohner and Martin Tillman produced all of the music to The Ring 2. They was also in charge of the Non-Digetic sound that are heard throughout the film. in regards to non- diegetic, within the one minute thirty trailer I watched, there was a lot of high intensity music playing. for Diegetic there are many sound effects that have been added in such as the sound of a TV un tuned and also some screaming sound that are being made by Samara's victims. In the film the sound editors also etablished a sound Motif. They have done this by using the sound of the TV tuning in.

 
Editing- Within the extract that i watch and also throughout the entire film, the editing contains many Ellipsis' such as when you hear the TV crackle and are waiting for Samara to appear. The editors have also used many Faced paced editing techniques such as match on action so that the pace of the film is increased and also so that it helps to create more tension. Also about 5 minutes through, the editors have changed it into black and white to create the effect of looking out of the TV and into the 'normal' world. They acheived this by adding a fuzzy effect and changing the colour of the clip.



Camerawork- The camera work in the first 5 minutes are mainly mid-long shots.



Review- The Ring Two received negative reviews with a current positive rating of 20% on Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic gives the movie a 69 out of a possible 100. The main complaint was the script and screenplay, which some critics thought was dull and "littered with plot holes", but Naomi Watts' performance as Rachel Keller was praised by critics.

In 1988, two young children, Katie and Kristi, live with their mother (Julie) and boyfriend Dennis. Kristi beings to interact with an invisable friend later named as Toby. Once Kristi begins to interact with the imaginaruy friend wierd things begin happening in the house and once camera's are set up the demonic figure appears as dust falls from the roof.

When the footage is later reviewed, The incident is spotted and camera's are then placed all throughout the house.That night in the girls' bedroom, Kristi wakes up and begins talking to someone off-camera before going back to bed. Dennis discovers a strange symbol in the girls' closet. He finds the same symbol on a picture of women in a book about demonology. Dennis then explains to Julie just what the symbol means.

Katie persuades baby sitter Randy to play Bloody Mary in the bathroom and it takes two attempts befkore Randy is screaming in pain as he is scrathed on the left of his stomach.The invisible demon terrorizes Katie and Kristi, harming Katie and later dragging her into a closet in the girls' bedroom until Kristi agrees to do what it asks. Something growls and bangs on the door but eventually leaves. Katie turns and unleashes a demonic scream that throws him to the other side of the room, injuring his leg. As Lois looks down onto him, Dennis' body is suddenly snapping backwards and killing him in a violent way.

Setting: In film and TV the setting involves the time, place in which the film takes place and it also helps to develop the plot of a film / TV show.

As well as the setting there are people that are in charge of designing the set and also decorating it. These two departments are some of the most important in terms of the set, there is also a buyer who buys items for the set, a lead man who is in charge of the sets crew, a set dresser who applies and removes props from the set ready for the next scene and a Greensman 

who is responsible for all artistic elements to the set.

Along with the plot, themes and characters, the setting is regarded as being one of the most important components of a film. Taken from Wikipedia.

Props: All films and TV shows use props. To be efficient in the use of props they have somebody that is called a Prop Master. The prop master is responsible for every single prop that appears with in a film or show. As well as a prop master, the film directors have to find a prop maker who makes the props and also, if necessary, a weapons master.

Costumes: All films have a costume designer. A costume designer is responsible for designing and making the costumes that would be used in the film / show. They designer is also responsible for the organisation of the costumes in terms of when they are used and by who. The costumes designer is one of the people that works the closest to the director because he/ she needs to understand what the characters need and should have.

With the costume designer comes a costume standby. The costume standby is somebody that is present on the set at all-time whilst filming is in progress. They are responsible for ensuring that all of the costumes are up to standard and un damaged. As well as these two there are many others that have an important contribution towards the costumes that are used.

Special effects: Special effects are used in films to add different actions such as explosions, breaks, burns without actually having to create it in real life. They are added during the process of editing.

In post production, the sound, pictues and effects are added to create the final film. The post production stage usually involves a lot less people thsn the actual stage of production. The main people that are associated witht the post production stage of creating a film are; The Editor, Director, Producer, Special Effects Editor and the Sound editor and finally the dubbing engineers. The Post Production process begins with the editors "rough assembly of the film" which would usually have been produced during the production of the film. After everything else, the process is ended with something called a "Fine Cut". A fine cut is what has been created one all of the details, sounds and images have been perfected to the correct standards that are expected fgrom the director/producer.

Department associated with Post-Production-

Visual effects: Visual effects are post-production additions of the films images. The visual effects department work closely with special effects to alter any on-set effects.

Sound and music: The sound and music editors are responsible for adding all of the sounds and pieces of music that are to be added during post-production. Within sound and music there are many other editors that help to create maximum effects. They include; the Dialogue editor (The dialogue in the soundtrack), the Sound editor (Sound effects in the soundtrack), Re-Recording mixer (Finalises the films audio) and the Foley artist (creates many ambient sound effects for the film).

DreamWorks are a motion picture company that specialise in creating animated films as well as others. They began in 1994 as an ambitious attempt by media moguls Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. They are the people behind the SKG at the bottom of the logo. DreamWorks are best known for creating the likes of Shrek and Kung Fu Panda.

Paramount Pictures Corporation is an American film and television production/distribution company that was founded in 1912. The company is currently owned by VIACOM. Universal Pictures is a subsidiary of NBCUniversal, is one of the six major movie studios. the company was founded in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, it is one of the oldest American movie studios still in continuous production. On May 11, 2004, the controlling stake in the company was sold by Vivendi Universal to General Electric, parent of NBC The resulting media super-conglomerate was renamed NBC Universal, while Universal Studios Inc. remained the name of the production subsidiary.

Helix Films

Helix Films was formed in 2008 by Gaukhar Noortas, Kevin Foo and Steven-Charles Jaffe to develop and produce feature motion pictures. The company is based in Los Angeles. The goal of Helix Films is to work toghether with film makers so that they can produce movies that have an international appeal. They are planning on doing this with a budget that will reflect what the current economy. The films will have an emphasis on story and character-driven projects, the scope will range from historical epic to psychological thrillers, science fiction, animation, and comedy.

Retro films is are an indepandant Film Production Company that is based in Bournemouth, Dorset. They specialise in short films, documentaries and music videos. one of their most notable film is the 'Stones' which won an award at the ITV local film awards in 2006. After being established in 2004, Retro Films has worked hard to secure close links to The Regent Cinema and other industry partners.

Warp Film is an independant UK film production company that is based in Sheffield and London, UK and they also have an office that is based in Melbourne, Australia. The copmany launched in 2002 and have been the producers of many award winning films such as This is England and Four Lions.

00:06 – 00:08 2 Seconds	The second screen is a black screen with the name of the production company. The text is in white and is in a bold font. The words ‘AN ‘ and ‘PRODUCTION’ are in bold because they want them to stand out as they want them to stand out from the name
00:08 – 00:12 4 Seconds	The third screen has a book with a picture of a pair of hands. The right side of the screen has been faded in black so that the filmmakers name can be read clearly. The writing reads, ‘A Film By David Fincher’. The writing that is appearing on the screen looks as if somebody has hand wrote it.
00:12 – 00:12 0 Seconds	After 12 seconds there is a old type writer. This quickly cuts to the next clip of the actor cleaning a silver piece of metal. The screen the changes back to the side of the old type writer. In this second there are many fast cuts that speeds up the pace of the film.

16 seconds	After 16 seconds the guy is still cleaning stuff. To clean it he is rubbing it with his hands. This lasts for 1 seconds then the screen fades out to black.
17 seconds	After 17 seconds the screen fades out from the previous shot and into the next title screen. The name of the second actor (Morgan Freeman) appears in white writing.
20 seconds	After 20 seconds the screen fades out from the title screen and into a shot of the guy with what looks to be some fabric. He seems to be organizing items. The camera shot is a close up of his hands on the fabric and it lasts on screen for approximately 3 seconds.
23 seconds	After 23 Seconds the screen fades into a black screen and the title of the film flickers in the top right corner. The title screen stays the same for a second until it changes into the next.
24 seconds	At 24 seconds the title of the film has flickered into the middle of the shot and is in a white font that looks like it has had some of the letters and the number 7 wiped out. It lasts on screen for around 3 seconds.
